C.E.L. (Consistent Ethic of Life)

Duquesne University's CEL is an organization that embraces a consistent ethic of life beginning in our university community and radiating out to the global community. CEL raises awareness and provides education on issues affecting humankind from conception to natural death. CEL works to promote positive action towards worldwide solidarity, compassion, with other organizations and departments, we strive to enhance the quality of life on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels.

“CEL has given me the opportunity to learn more about the Consistent Ethic of Life and how it ties ALL life issues together. Through movies, trips to Holy Family, and group discussions, I am able to learn about and act upon many different issues that affect lives everywhere.”

–Martina Domanovic, Sophomore Sociology Major

“CEL has given me a greater understanding of life issues and a sense of personal responsibility to help make the world a better place. The integration of service projects with faith-based discussions has given me a more well-rounded approach to living out my faith on a day-to-day basis.”

–Colleen Hair, Junior, Pharmacy Major

Additional Information

CEL is involved in various outreach opportunities during the year, but our main outreach is to Holy Family Institute. HFI is a residential facility for children that have been removed from their homes either because they were a danger to their homes or their homes were a danger to them. One Saturday a month, CEL goes to HFI to work with the young girls 8-13. Activities include everything from cooking to crafts to positive self-image activities.

While outreach is a vital part of what CEL does to protect and celebrate life. Equally as important is the time spent together further educating ourselves and in reflection on our outreach. Through the year read and reflect on a specific justice issue or documents or writings from the U.S Conference of Catholic Bishops or other respective sources. Once a year, students from CEL educate themselves on a global issue and domestic issue for meetings with our senators and representatives in Washington , D.C.
